I have a BS in Physics, MS Physics, MS Electrical Eng., circuit design, programming, etc. for >15yrs.

I was a Webelos den leader for two years, and an Assistant Scoutmaster for 1-1/2 years.  I have attended University of Scouting for three years.  I have taught Crime Prevention to Webelos, and countless merit badges to scouts in my son's troop.
Why I am qualified to teach
Digital Technology
I've been using Digital Technology since probably you were born. Most of it started with my curiosity with Electronic Kits when I was 10. However, the kits that are available these days are much more sophisticated than the kits (mostly from Radio Shack) that my parents bought me. In this course, you will understand more about Digital Technology and how it all works together.
Prerequisites for this Activity

For the course being taught on 11/8/2014:

  • Complete Cyber Chip (see below) - Requirement #1a
  • Laptop computer with these requirements:
    • Running Windows 7, 8, 8.1, or Linux Debian or RedHat/CentOS Operating System
    • An administrative account (Windows = Administrator group, Linux = either sudo or known root password). We need permission to install programs (they can be removed later). If using Linux, be sure to let me know which flavor and version so I can get the compatible software in advance. You can also do a Live OS for Linux if necessary (runs off flash drive). Please contact me if you plan to do this.
    • Flash drive with at least 8GB free.
    • Hard drive: 20GB free
    • Wireless network card (802.11g is good enough)
    • Laptop power adapter
    • Extension cord (if possible)
    • Mouse (corded or cordless with good batteries) and drivers pre-installed
    • 1024x768 minimum resolution (higher preferred).
    • Some familiarity with Microsoft Office 2007, 2010, 2013 (Windows only), LibreOffice (free - preferred) or OpenOffice.org (free).
  • Please do #6e and #6f, storing it on your flash drive.
  • Please do #9 at home. You will discuss your answers with the counselor.
  • Be sure to download the software in advance (more information forthcoming).

The Cyber Chip which has different requirements for middle-school and high-school scouts. The Cyber Chip expires annually (must be "recharged").  This probably takes a good part of a troop meeting to get this done as one scout (or patrol) much teach another patrol (or troop), and everyone in the patrol must serve an active role in the presentation. Furthermore, the videos for grades 6-8 are different than grades 9-12. The NetSmartz Site  site has a 5-minute video and you need to choose two other relevant videos (of your choice).  Here are a list of some videos that I found with which you can choose, or you can choose others relevant to the Cyber Chip (so long as your unit leader approves):
